Since its foundation in 1902, Kobe University has encouraged an enterprising spirit and independent thinking among all its faculty, students and staff. While upholding its traditions, the University is committed to the creation of knowledge and new values through interdisciplinary approaches, and to solving the issues facing our society. Kobe University vigorously pursues academic endeavor in the exploration and practice of novel theories under the spirit of "integrity, freedom, and cooperation".
We are committed to the creation of knowledge in a broad range of fields from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences to the life and medical sciences. One of the most comprehensive universities in Japan, the University is made up of 10 faculties, 15 graduate schools, one institute and many centers covering those disciplines.
The Integrated Research Center of Kobe University serves as a core base for the pursuit of advanced research, housing 12 flagship research projects. In the course of our quest for academic excellence, many of our research areas have gained considerable recognition worldwide as the University's "core research areas", and the number is increasing on an ongoing basis. Most of them are also on the path of becoming a "centre of excellence". With more and more researchers gathering here from around the world, Kobe University is focusing on ways to strengthen ties with international partners who share our values. Our eight overseas offices, located across three continents, play a major role in facilitating such global partnerships.
Kobe University promotes academic innovation in collaboration with other universities, research institutes, and industry in Japan and abroad. Fostering global leaders who possess a deep understanding of the world’s complexities and strong leadership skills is one of our key goals. To further internationalize its educational environment, Kobe University is engaged in creating double degree programs with its partner universities. As of today, we have over 300 exchange agreements with foreign institutions, including 35 ongoing double degree agreements with universities from Europe, Asia and North America. The University has also introduced structural changes for the purpose of internationalization. With the new quarter system, it is easier for Kobe students to start their study abroad at the beginning of a semester and to gain credits over a shorter period of time while in Kobe.
2019 marks the 100th anniversary of our Research Institute for Economics and Business Administration, where researchers now pioneer the digitization of pre-modern manuscripts. This year we have also established three Core Research Centers to enhance multidisciplinary activities for our flagship projects: the Research Center for Membrane and Film Technology (formerly part of the Graduate School of Engineering), the Center for Maritime Education and Research, and the Center for Advanced Medical Engineering Research & Development. With these new organizations and initiatives the University aims to provide solutions to the challenges facing our changing world.
