National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University) is one of the largest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in Russia, as well as the CIS and Eastern Europe. It was established in 1992, and in just over two decades it has grown from a specialized institution focused on social and economic sciences to a comprehensive university based on multidisciplinary research, international cooperation and digital education. Now a dynamic university with four campuses in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Perm, HSE is a leader in combining Russian education traditions with the best international teaching and research practices. It offers high quality education at all levels – from a lyceum for school students to post-graduate and MBA programmes.

HSE was one of the first universities in Russia to develop digital instruments for use in education. Today, HSE is ranked 5th in the world by the number of courses on the global online-platform Coursera.

HSE University operates more than 100 academic and scientific institutes and research centres, 39 international laboratories, as well as 44 study and research laboratories. The HSE’s institutes and laboratories are overseen by world-renowned scholars, including Nobel laureate Eric Maskin; Ronald Inglehart, author and director of the World Values Survey; Jacques-François Thisse, one of the world’s most well-known and frequently cited researchers in the field of spatial economics; the Fields medal laureate Andrey Okunkov, and Fedor Bogomolov, a distinguished specialist in the field of algebraic and arithmetic geometry; and others. Moreover, HSE is a leading centre for expert analysis and plays an active role in developing legislation, state programmes, and strategies for federal and regional implementation.

The National Research University offers over 350 degree in more than 40 fields of study as well as over 30 business educational programmes (MBA, DBA, EMBA, etc.); and more than 600 continuing educational programmes.

Today, around 40,000 students are enrolled at the university, of whom 3,400 come from outside Russia. About 4,000 research staff and teachers work at the HSE University; over 350 of these have PhD degree awarded by the best universities of Europe, Asia and North America.

HSE University maintains partnerships with more than 360 universities and research organizations from 63 countries. The HSE’s international partnerships include 57 double degree programmes with 39 foreign universities; exchanges of students, teachers and researchers; agreements on joint research in various fields; and internships for staff members and students alike. A UNESCO Chair has been established as part of the HSE’s partnership with UNESCO on Copyright and Other Intellectual Property Rights.
