More than a Great View

Located at Castle Point on Hudson in Hoboken, New Jersey, directly overlooking Manhattan, the view from all points on Stevens’ beautiful, 55-acre campus makes it ever clear that Stevens is situated in one of the most exciting and practical places in the world. In addition to unlimited access to amazing cultural and social activities, Stevens’ proximity to New York City and the surrounding metro area cultivates unmatchable internships, cooperative education placements, and other project-based learning opportunities for Stevens students. Hoboken has a rich history and reputation for being a hip, small town in a big place, ranked the #9 college town in the nation by The Princeton Review. Stevens students are recognized as an integral part of the Hoboken community.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit

Stevens is driven by core values that include a solid commitment to immersing students in the comprehensive process of innovation. This means students are continuously exposed to advancing their ideas through Research and Development (R&D) to the commercialization stage, the point at which their vision and knowledge have the greatest impact. One way Stevens achieves this is by integrating the startup experience into the curriculum. Two major programs, specifically, provide students with experiential instruction in real-world startup companies: an 18-month curriculum that brings both business and engineering students together to develop university technology into an engineered solution under the guidance of an experienced CEO, and the capstone experiences provided for students in all majors, many of which are sponsored by government and industry and go on to be actualized and patented.

Close-Knit Community

Students at Stevens are surrounded by peers and mentors who assist and collaborate with each other to cultivate mutual support and inspiration. Our 8:1 student-to-faculty ratio means that students have unparalleled access to faculty known in their fields and respected for their expertise. Faculty members are inspirational and knowledgeable, world leaders who attract prestigious grants and support for the innovation they drive. Equally important, they care to know students and uphold the legacy of bridging students to opportunities. Whether informing students of scholarships and conferences or research and professional networks, academic leaders at Stevens are deeply committed to advancing students to the highest level of achievement in whatever way they can. Stevens’ family of over 33,000 successful alumni includes leaders in industry and government who maintain their connections to Stevens by recruiting students to internships and jobs and by offering their talents, expertise, and networks in a way that greatly benefits students and the Stevens community.

Engineering Design Spine

Spanning 140 years of educating leaders in innovation, Stevens is a trailblazer among engineering universities. Broad-based learning for breadth of understanding and applied learning as an integral part of the educational experience are core values that make Stevens’ engineering programs distinct. At the heart of Stevens’ engineering curriculum is a standout series of eight core design courses referred to as the Design Spine. The first five core design courses are taken by all students and are taught by professors who bring the benefit of their industry-based design experience into the classroom. The last three courses are taken within their discipline – a junior course followed by a two-semester capstone senior project.

The Design Spine courses are the major vehicle for developing a set of competencies to meet educational goals in areas such as creative thinking, problem solving, teamwork, economics of engineering, project management, communication skills, ethics, and environmental awareness. They are also linked to the engineering science courses taken concurrently each semester. This is done so that experiments and design projects provide a tangible context for the engineering science lecture materials.

Business, Science, Humanities, and the Arts at a Technological University

Studying business, science, humanities, and the arts at Stevens gives students a distinct advantage not available at other universities. For one, technological universities have access to outstanding research grants and projects. Forbes.com ranked Stevens #3 among U.S. research universities for research ROI. In addition, studying at a premier engineering university gives all Stevens students exposure to the full cycle of innovation, something applicable to challenges all graduates will face whether they move on to careers or graduate studies. Science research comes to life, for example, when science students work to create new knowledge while their engineering colleagues take that knowledge and design products or processes that, when applied, solve real-world problems. Choosing Stevens as the place to develop and solidify future scientific research gives students a distinctive edge and solid experience in introducing meaningful research that has clear applications in today’s world.

Similarly, art, music, literature and communications, philosophy, history, and social science majors at Stevens benefit from pursuing these disciplines charged by the latest advances in technology, science, and innovation and the fundamental idea that science and technology can be used as intellectual tools of inquiry.

Business students at Stevens are also at an advantage as they contribute to transforming “business as usual” by becoming highly skilled in creating solutions at the intersection of business, technology, and product commercialization. Stevens’ business programs are designed to prepare students for the complex, cross-functional, and highly technical approaches businesses require today. In addition to the unique business and technology major, Stevens has also paved the way for undergraduate studies in quantitative finance by being one of the first universities to launch the discipline as an undergraduate major.

From Here to Career

Driven by a distinctive career-orientation, Stevens is extremely successful in connecting students to summer internships and cooperative education placements with many of the world’s leading companies. Stevens’ location just across the Hudson River from New York City places students a ten-minute ferry or train ride from the hub of world commerce and industry. This is a great benefit for students who seek challenging and convenient professional practice experiences and careers. Many student internships and cooperative education placements lead directly to permanent placement upon graduation. It is no surprise that 300+ companies actively recruit on campus.

Our Office of Career Development has relationships with hundreds of companies who recruit Stevens students precisely because they have the characteristics and educational opportunities that are attractive to top employers. Stevens career fairs feature top companies offering full-time employment and rewarding summer internships. Prepped and confident Stevens students take advantage of the opportunity to meet impressive companies like Morgan Stanley and Colgate-Palmolive, to name a few. Extensive opportunities for experiential, project-based learning through undergraduate research and capstone projects also propel Stevens students to success. As a result, Stevens graduates have always fared exceptionally well in career and graduate school placement and above average in starting salaries. In fact, Stevens was ranked 9th in the nation for net return on investment (ROI), according to a recent study of 1,500 colleges and universities byPayscale.com to help students and parents evaluate the “payback” value of a student’s undergraduate degree.
