The University of the Basque Country is the public university of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. This region is located on the northern coast of Spain. Its small territory, similar in size to Rhode Island State (USA) or the Rhein-Ruhr territory in Germany, overlooks the Bay of Biscay and combines an alpine relief with 246 kilometres of coastline, alternating spectacular cliffs and fine sandy beaches.

Founded in 1980, our university is a multilingual (Spanish and Basque are its official languages, and more and more courses in English are offered every year), research oriented institution with an international outlook. In 2010 the University of the Basque Country obtained the recognition as ‘International Campus of Excellence’ by the Spanish Ministry of Education and in 2014 signed an alliance with the University of Bordeaux in order to create a cross-border campus of excellence, the first of its kind in Europe.

Its 20 faculties and schools are distributed in three campuses, one for each of the three historical territories or provinces. The biggest is the Campus of Biscay. The capital of Biscay is Bilbao, home of the world renowned Guggenheim Museum. The Campus of Gipuzkoa is mainly located in San Sebastian, the most popular touristic destination of the Basque Country, and the smallest is the Campus of Araba, centrally located in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the administrative capital of the autonomous community.

The University of the Basque Country offers a wide range of degrees in all areas of knowledge, from experimental sciences, engineering and humanities to health sciences, economics, arts or architecture. We have 70 undergraduate programs, and 200 postgraduate programs. All of them are fully adapted to the European Higher Education area. Our PhD studies lead to more than 500 graduates being granted their doctorate degrees every year. We have 45,000 students, more than 3,300 teaching staff and an administrative staff of 1,500 workers. In recent years the University of the Basque Country has achieved major increases in its scientific output in terms of international visibility.
